Book Of Mormon Musical – A Wise Mix of Nasty Satire and Compassionate Truth Telling

Book Of Mormon is currently performing in Chicago for a long run. Tony Adler reviewed the musical at ChicagoReader.com. Here is the review:

I know it’ll seem incomprehensible to you fans of talking turds, but I’ve never paid Comedy Central’s South Park much mind one way or another. And when New York fell all over itself last year appreciating The Book of Mormon, I wondered if there wasn’t just a smidge of hyperbole in calling the musical by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with Robert Lopez) the best of the “century.”

Now that I’ve seen the Chicago production, however, I’ve been—well—converted.

A wise mix of nasty satire and compassionate truth telling, Parker, Stone, and Lopez’s tale of Mormon missionaries in Uganda is as entertaining—and, strangely, uplifting—a piece of work as anything in recent American theater. Although the book draws whole quivers full of big red arrows to everything that’s ludicrous about the Mormon way, it also ends up making a case for the hope we all derive from silly myths. Meanwhile, playful as it is, it ranks up there with Lynn Nottage’s Ruined in exposing the danger, dignity, and distortions of African life. The cast is uniformly and perfectly seductive. And is that Steppenwolf’s famously earnest James Vincent Meredith, showing a new side of himself as the Ugandan village chief? Incredible.

The Book of Mormon national tour producers announced that a $25 ticket lottery will be offered at all cities on the tour. The musical continues its Los Angeles engagement through November 25 at the Pantages Theatre.

Two-and-a-half hours prior to each performance, individuals may enter at the theatre box office to win one or two tickets to the Tony-winning musical. The winning names will be drawn two hours before curtain. The $25 tickets are cash-only and may be anywhere in the theatre. No preferred seats, it’s all by the lottery only.

The Broadway production of The Book of Mormon draws large crowds outside the Eugene O’Neill Theatre for its ticket lottery.

Tony nominee Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner co-star in the tour of the Tony-winning hit that launched its U.S. tour in Denver CO, in August. “South Park” creators-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Tony-winning Avenue Q songwriter Robert Lopez collaborated on the script and score to The Book of Mormon, which earned Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. The big-hearted, irreverent and profane musical traces the journey of two mismatched missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who take the trip of a lifetime.

Book of Mormon Musical comes to San Francisco in November 2012

Broadway blockbuster “The Book of Mormon” Musical comes to San Francisco’s Curran Theatre in November 2012.

One of the most ecstatically received musicals ever, “Book of Mormon” — which will be opening show of SHN’s 2012-13 season — marries up old-school musical theater pizazz with Cartman-worthy snarkiness in an outrageous riff on Mormon missionaries dispatched to a drought-riddled, AIDS-ravaged village in Africa. Enthusiastic streams of expletives exist side by side with jazz hands in this outrageous marriage of pop culture, political satire and high art.

Created by Matt Stone and Trey Parker of “South Park” fame and Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”), “Book” has been the hottest ticket on the planet since its debut last year. Heavenly reviews, nine Tony Awards including best musical and the emergence of the Gleek generation has elevated “Book” to must-see status.

Mr. Parker and Mr. Stone take a schoolboy’s delight in throwing spitballs at things sacred, including most major religions,” decreed the New York Times. “But you also may have gathered that these men take equal pleasure in the transcendent, cathartic goofiness of song-and-dance numbers.”

The Original Broadway Cast Recording for “The Book of Mormon,” winner of the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, is available on Ghostlight Records.

Book of Mormon May Debut at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre

The nine-time Tony Award-winning hit The Book of Mormon may be the next tenant of London’s Prince of Wales Theatre in 2013, according to the Daily Mail. West End Producer Sonia Friedman has announced a possible West End production in London by 2012. As of January 2012, it has been reported that it is currently in talks for the show to make a West End debut at the Prince of Wales Theatre by early 2013. The Book of Mormon had been previously reported for a London premiere in 2013 with Tony-winning Jerusalem and La Cage aux Folles producer Sonia Friedman attached. She is also among the producers of the Broadway run.

The Daily Mail reports that Mamma Mia! will exit the Prince of Wales Theatre for a run at the Novello theatre beginning in September. Another production will take up residence at the Prince of Wales prior to The Book of Mormon’s arrival there in early 2013. Talks are currently underway.

Representatives for the Broadway production did not have information on future London plans. “South Park” creators-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Tony-winning Avenue Q songwriter Robert Lopez collaborated on the script and score to the musical, which earned Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical.

The first North American tour of The Book of Mormon will launch August 14 through September 02 at Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House, prior to a 12-week Los Angeles engagement at the Pantages Theatre Sept. 5-Nov. 25. The tour was originally planned for December 2012, but has been moved forward four months.

A separate production of The Book of Mormon will play almost three-month Chicago engagement at the Bank of America Theatre. It will play Chicago Dec. 11, 2012-March 3, 2013. This will be the show’s first North American sit-down production.
