Book of Mormon Topped the Broadway Box Office For First Time

For the first time in its ongoing 11th month Broadway run, “The Book of Mormon” topped the box office last week. The show, which has been widely successful, had been kept out of the top spot for highest-grossing show in a single week by long-running hits like “The Lion King” and “Wicked”.

According to weekly box office data released on Monday by the Broadway League, “Mormon” grossed $1,455,329, compared to $1,349,433 for “Wicked” and $1,226,681 for “The Lion King.” The Lion King dragged to rank fourth by “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which, like “Mormon,” is a relatively new hit that opened on Broadway in 2011; “Spider-Man” grossed $1,268,002 last week.

Book Of Mormon Shatter Broadways’ Box Office Records Again

The Book of Mormon, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical co-created by the South Park team and Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez raked in an astounding $1,428,663 last week for eight performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre this weekend. On January 3rd it was reported that the previous week had shattered the theater’s box office records for the 24th consecutive week in a row by bringing in $1,752,601. The Book of Mormon premiered on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on March 24, 2011 and its cast soundtrack also debuted the best Billboard sales since The Little Mermaid‘s Broadway edition.

The show has consistently been one of the top five selling shows on Broadway. Vogue Magazine described the show as “the filthiest, most offensive, and – surprise – sweetest thing you’ll see on Broadway this year, and quite possibly the funniest musical ever.” The show was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards in 2011 and blessed with 9 Tony Awards.
