Casting announced for the Chicago company of The Book of Mormon, the winner of the 2011 Tony Award for Best Musical and eight other Tonys. The Chicago production of the comedy by South Park honchos Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, plays the Bank of America Theatre starting December 11, 2012 through June 02, 2013. It’s separate from the first national tour, which is currently at Los Angeles’s Pantages Theatre.

Nic Rouleau, currently making his Broadway debut as straightlaced missionary Elder Price (the role originally played on Broadway by Andrew Rannells, now of NBC sitcom The New Normal), will reprise that role here. Socially awkward Elder Cunningham (the role originated by Josh Gad, now of NBC sitcom 1600 Penn) will be played by Pitch Perfect’s Ben Platt.

Stephanie Umoh, a Theatre World Award winner for the recent Broadway revival of Ragtime, will play African ingenue Nabulungi, the role for which the Broadway cast’s Nikki M. James won a Tony. Two more leading roles will be filled by Chicago actors: Steppenwolf ensemble member James Vincent Meredith is Mafala Hatimbi, and Northwestern alum Jackson Evans (Drury Lane’s Hairspray and Spamalot) will play Elder McKinley.

Book of Mormon Ticket Lottery at all Cities on the Tour

The Book of Mormon national tour producers announced that a $25 ticket lottery will be offered at all cities on the tour. The musical continues its Los Angeles engagement through November 25 at the Pantages Theatre.

Two-and-a-half hours prior to each performance, individuals may enter at the theatre box office to win one or two tickets to the Tony-winning musical. The winning names will be drawn two hours before curtain. The $25 tickets are cash-only and may be anywhere in the theatre. No preferred seats, it’s all by the lottery only.

The Broadway production of The Book of Mormon draws large crowds outside the Eugene O’Neill Theatre for its ticket lottery.

Tony nominee Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner co-star in the tour of the Tony-winning hit that launched its U.S. tour in Denver CO, in August. “South Park” creators-writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Tony-winning Avenue Q songwriter Robert Lopez collaborated on the script and score to The Book of Mormon, which earned Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. Ladies and gentlemen, if I had not just spent all my money on a ticket to see “The Book of Mormon” at the Pantages, I would wager you money that I enjoyed the aforementioned show less than you will, should you choose to see it.

This is not an attempt on my part to try and be a pretentious theater critic (goodness knows just my being a theater critic makes me more than pretentious enough already) or to be contrary for the sake of being contrary. It also doesn’t mean that I don’t think that people should see “The Book of Mormon.” It just means that I didn’t love it as much as most people probably will.

To preface, I should note that I saw the original production last summer and enjoyed it immensely. The show, which follows two young Mormons (Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner) on their mission to Uganda, is a funny one—as is expected from a show written by the creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and the composer of “Avenue Q,” Bobby Lopez. “The Book of Mormon,” like its creators’ previous works, does not shy away from crassness, and preaches a very twenty-first century brand of humor, chock full of pop culture references and metatheatrical moments.

Unfortunately for me, though, the show did not hold up quite so well upon a second viewing. Perhaps it was because I already knew what all the jokes were—though there are some shows I’ve seen countless times, and still laugh at every joke. However, I suspect that this is another case like my second viewing “Newsies”—as I watched “The Book of Mormon,” I couldn’t help but feel that the cast’s energy was kind of down. Granted, this was their fourth out of five shows on this unusually hot weekend, but still, I got the impression that these professional actors were going through the motions (literally) more than anything else. Also distracting was the fact that many moments came off as a poorly-transcribed copy of the New York production.
