Book of Mormon Coming to Toronto, Des Moines and Minneapolis in 2013

The Book of Mormon, the Tony-winning Broadway musical, The brainchild of “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be coming to Toronto, Des Moines and Minneapolis next year.

The show gently pokes fun at two Mormon missionaries who get more than they planned for when they travel to Uganda.

Co-written by “Avenue Q” co-creator Robert Lopez, it features the off-colour humour and salty language that its writers have become known for. Still, Garefino thinks more mature theatre-goers won’t be deterred.

The nine-time Tony-winning musical about a pair of Mormon missionaries who get shipped off to Uganda, will launch its U.S. tour Aug. 14-Sept. 2 in Denver, CO. The premiere engagement sold-out within five hours. Also announced is a Sept. 5-Nov. 25 run at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre.

Additional tour stops include the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines (Jan. 24-Feb. 3, 2013) and the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis (Feb. 5-17, 2013). Mirvish Productions will bring The Book of Mormon to Toronto in May-June 2013. A separate Chicago production will play Dec. 11, 2012-March 3, 2013, at the Bank of America Theatre.

Emmy-winning “South Park” creators-writers Parker and Stone and Tony-winning Avenue Q songwriter Lopez collaborated on the script and score to The Book of Mormon, which earned Tony Awards for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. Co-directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw, The Book of Mormon opened to critical acclaim March 24, 2011, at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. Both earned Tony Awards for their work.
