James Vincent Meredith co-stars in the Chicago production of \u2018The Book of Mormon\u201d<\/a> interviewed By Julia Borcherts for RedEye.<\/p>\n

What was your audition process?<\/strong>
\nApril of this year, I was called in to audition at the equity offices here in town. I had a scene and a few bars of a song. They called me back\u2014maybe a week later at the most\u2014and I did the same thing again with the director in the room and a few more people behind the table [laughs]. And then after that, I just kind of waited and waited and I actually I think I knew via my agent in May or June. But there were so many other things to get worked out that I didn\u2019t really go public with it until the last few weeks. [Laughs]<\/p>\n

What did you do when you found out you\u2019d landed the role?<\/strong>
\nFirst, I was crazy with excitement and then I got crazy with fear because I haven\u2019t done a musical on this big a stage in\u2026uh\u2026ever.<\/p>\n

I think I\u2019d only done one musical before and that was \u201cThe King and I\u201d out at Drury Lane Oakbrook\u2014maybe five, six years ago\u2014and I didn\u2019t really have to sing much [laughs], so that was a lot less stressful.<\/p>\n

So once I got over the excitement and the following fear, I just got to work and started seeing a vocal coach and tried to learn about as much of the musical as I could before I went to New York for rehearsals.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s one of the craziest or most unexpected things that\u2019s happened so far during rehearsals?<\/strong>
\nAt one point, we had finished a run-through and there\u2019s a guy who\u2019s piping in with these notes here and there and I don\u2019t really know who he is but I imagine he\u2019s important because no one is cutting him off and he\u2019s literally sitting right next to our director. And everyone\u2019s taking his notes\u2014and they\u2019re pretty good notes.<\/p>\n

So we get through the whole process and at the very end, I\u2019m talking to one of the actors and I\u2019m like, \u201cShould I know this guy?\u201d And they\u2019re like, \u201cYeah, that\u2019s Trey Parker!\u201d [laughs]<\/p>\n

I\u2019m like, \u201cNo [bleep]!\u201d I couldn\u2019t believe that that was the guy who was giving us these notes\u2014at the very beginning of rehearsals and through the process, we never really had an opportunity where we met Trey and Matt, and I had never honestly really seen them.<\/p>\n

So I actually went up and met him afterwards and told him that and he kind of cracked up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
